Ex addl AG Syngkon suggests legalising prostitution, illicit liquor to reduce crimes

Shillong, Nov 16: Former Meghalaya additional Advocate General and Mawkhar Rangbah Shnong WHD Syngkon suggested that prostitution and illicit liquor should be legalised in the Meghalaya to fight against sex crimes and and bootlegging.

Speaking during the interaction between the police and the Rangbah Shnongs as part of the “Safe, Secure Shillong” project at police headquarter Friday Syngkon said,
“Prostitution should be legalise to counter sex-related crimes which is on the rise in the state.”

Syngkon made this observation on the backdrop of rising crimes against women as the crime chart showed that out of the ninety-one crime cases in East Khasi district from January to June this year sixty were rape cases.

Buttering his suggestion to the police so that they could pursue with the government to legalise prostitution and country liquor Syngkon said the suggestion was made after he saw the alarming sex-related crime statistics in the state.

Syngkon was one of the Rangbah Shnongs (headmen) from all localities of Shillong who participated in the police programme.

Back his suggestion, Syngkon said during his recent tour to South East Asian countries the crime rate dropped down after legalising prostitution. He said, “If we legalise prostitution, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS can be contained besides reducing sex-related crimes.”

Syngkon also expressed his concern over the rising bootlegging in the capital,and felt that legalizing of the illicit liquor (country liquor locally known as ‘ka kyiad’) the government can introduce check and balance. – By Our Reporter
