TURA, AUG 29: In major bus tragedy in West Garo Hills four persons died while 28 passengers were critically injured, including a policeman and a woman.

The incident took place around 10:30 pm at Dolongre village, about 40 km from Tura on Thursday. Three died at the spot and one of the passengers succumbed to the injuries in hospital Friday morning.

Twenty eight passengers were injured that includes four female and the rest male passengers. They  were brought to Tura Civil hospital at around 2 am and were given medical aid. Six of the injured were referred for medical treatment to Guwahati.

The private bus bearing MLO8 – 0609 (airbus) was on its way to Shillong from Tura. The bus left Tura at around 8:30 pm on Thursday.

An injured passenger undergoing treatment at Tura Civil Hospital said that the speeding bus turned and skidded off the road.

The BSF troops deployed for counter insurgency operation at Jengjal immediately rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. The rescue operation was led by assistant commandant Vinay Gehlot and his team of 25 personnel.

Around 12:30 am, the team from Tura civil hospital rushed to the spot and attended to the patients.

The driver of the bus is said to be critical. Many have sustained injuries on their head, eye and fracture.

One of the deceased identified as Aditya Hajong, 26, a librarian at Tura Government College, was travelling with his wife.

Pelina Momin, 39, a resident Chengmari Chutipara of Goalpara district in Assam, Bhim Thapa, a constable of the 3rd Battalion posted at Baghmara. He is a resident of Khlieh from Jowai. Kiripson Sangma, 35, a resident of Boithalangsu from Hamren in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

The critically injured passengers are Menito Rabha, Ranjiv Sangma, Robio Syiemio, Jensing Marak, Nepolean Chisim, Lartang Chiang and Dilbar Singh.

West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi took stock of the situation and visited Tura Civil hospital and met the injured. He asked the hospital to give best possible treatment and immediately shift those critical to Guwahati.- From Our Correspondent
