‘Fresh boundary survey’

SHILLONG, APR 22: The Co-ordinration Committee on International Border (CCIB) on  Friday reiterated its demand for fresh boundary survey before going ahead with the fencing of the international Indo-Bangla border.

A delegation of the CCIB met the Border Development Area (BAD) minister Prestone Tynsong seeking his intervention into the need to pressurize the centre to consider having fresh survey. A similar appeal will also be send to the Congress Member of Parliament Vincent H Pala, who was present during the meeting held at the office chamber of the minister.

“We demand that the state government should intervene to ensure that fresh survey is taken up,” CCIB spokesman GH Kharshanlor said.

Kharshanlor, also the president of the HNYF, said that the decision was taken after the district collectors of Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills have shown keen interest to start the border fencing.”We reject the idea of fencing because the protocol agreement has failed to take the issue concerning the people of the area into consideration,” he said.

He said that Meghalaya stand to lose huge acres of land if the protocol agreement is implemented. “We will also write officially to the MP from Shillong to take at his level for the centre to consider the need to have fresh survey,” he said.

When asked, the CCIB leader said that the minister has assured to take up the matter with the state government.

On contrary to the claims of the government that Meghalaya stand to gain over 240 acres of land, the CCIB secretary Kmen Myrchiang alleged that the protocol agreement is good in theory but practically the state will lose over 500 acres of land.

It may also be mentioned, the CCIB has also been demanding that fencing should start from zero line.-By Our Reporter
