TURA, SEPT 10: Meghalaya chief secretary Barkos Warjri on Thursday reviewed the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections at DRDA conference hall with district and police administration officials.

The polling is slated for October 12.

The meeting was attended by deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of all the five districts of Garo hills – East, West, South, North and South West Garo Hills. At the review meeting DCs and SPs briefed the Warjri on the poll preparedness in the run up to the election.

Additional director general of police (ADGP)  B Singh, inspector general of police (operations) GHP Raju and secretary home were also present during the meeting.

Briefing media Warjri said, “All the districts have prepared well for the council polls. All the factors have been discussed and taken into account”. On insurgency related issues, he said, “Meghalaya police is geared up for the polls and all necessary precaution and vigil will be maintained in Garo hills. The police will be on the job”.

When asked about civil organisations movement for exclusion of non-tribals from voting and contesting election, the chief secretary said, “The election will be held as per the provision laid down”.

The civil bodies in Garo hills have been raising their pitch for exclusion of non-tribals in the district council polls. They say that the council is meant exclusively for the tribals.

The administration of five district have pressed on the need for deployment of additional paramilitary troops for ensuing smooth conduct of the polls. They also briefed the chief secretary on the publication of the final roll for the council.

The election notification will be issued on September 14 and the election code of conduct and prohibitory order will be in force. The DCs of South West and North Garo Hills briefed the chief secretary about their meeting with neighbouring Assam district of Dhubri and Goalpara, which will be held.

The last date of filling of nomination is September 21 and the scrutiny will be done on the same day. Last date of withdrawal is September 24. The counting will be held on October 15.-From Our Correspondent
