Garo stir to be intensified

SHILLONG, AUG 13: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) has threatened to intensify its stir to put pressure on the government to concede to its demand for a separate Garoland.

GHSMC president Augustine Marak informed that the committee will sit on August 16 and a decision would be taken on future agitation programme to put pressure on the government.

Marak said, “Our stand is very clear that we want a separate state.”

He also warned  the future agitations will be more intense than the earlier ones. Committee spearheading the demands for a separate Garo state wants Kamrup and Goalpara districts of Assam to be included in the proposed “Garoland” as these areas are largely dominated by Garo people.

Earlier, the GHSMC had give twelve hours Garo hills bandh call in Garo Hills to press for its demands.

The demand for the separate state for Garos gained momentum after the union government gave its nod for the formation of Telangana state.- By Our Reporter
