Garos stage protest in Assam

SHILLONG, JAN 18: The United Garo Autonomous Council Movement Committee (UGACMC) on Monday organized a protest rally against the Assam government’s failure to create a separate Garo Autonomous Council in Assam.

Armed with placards, protesters also blocked the NH 37 in Dudnai, Goalpara, Assam during the rally.

The UGACMC has also threatened to intensify agitation against the Assam government.

“If the government of Assam fails to create the Garo autonomous council then we propose to intensify series of mass and effective agitation in various ways against the government of Assam until our demand is fulfilled and we are ready to sacrifice our lives for our genuine demand,” UGACMC chairman Alex K Sangma said in a statement today.

Sangma also requested the chief minister of Assam to be sympathetic enough to redress the grievances and ensure the rights of the Garo community in Assam.

“The recent creation of 4 autonomous councils namely Matak, Moran and Kamatapur to the non-tribal and Bodo – Kachari Welfare autonomous council by the Assam government is a sarcastic, shocking and an alarming step which vindicates the clear evidence of discrimination against the Garos of Assam,” he said.

“The Assam government has betrayed the faith of the Garos of Assam and has overlooked their genuine demand. They have taken initiatives for the above mentioned autonomous councils even though they don’t have a proper survey of their respective population,” Sangma further added.
