Shillong, Sept 14: GNLA lance corporal Mikjim T Sangma was killed even as the outfit commander-in-chief Sohan D Shira reportedly escaped when the East Garo hills police along with SWAT and COBRA raided its hideout in East Garo hills Friday.
The hideout of the GNLA commander-in-chief was located in the jungle between Jaljenggre and
Pilgonggre village about thirteen kms away from Williamnagar. As police closed in towards the hideout there was heavy exchange of fire between the security forces and the GNLA.
The encounter between the security force and the GNLA lasted for at least two hours. During the encounter Sangma was killed. Police recovered one HK rifle along with one
magazine, two AK magazines, two pistols, two grenade, six wireless sets and other incriminating documents from the camp of the militants.
According to the police GNLA C-in-C Sohan D Shira was in the camp during the encounter but somehow managed to escape. A massive combing operation has been launched to nab the fleeing militants.- By Our Reporter
