Camp raided, weapons seized

TURA, OCT 14: Meghalaya police on Tuesday busted a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) camp at Sakalgre village, near Rongram, about 22 km from Tura in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills.

Police said two senior members of the outfit, Baichung, an area commander and Jarek managed to escape.

The exchange of fire took place around 12 noon. The operation was led by Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos and Special Operation Team of West Garo Hills.

“The militants opened fired at the approaching police team and we had to retaliate”, said Mukesh Singh, West Garo hills SP.  The exchange of fire between militants and police lasted for about 30 minutes. Police said that the militants managed to escape taking advantage of the thick jungle.

Singh informed that a suspect Sengrak Momin, who was arrested yesterday, had provided information based on which the operation was launched.  Police said that the team from Tura moved towards Nokrek forest, where the camp was located around 6 am today. “Operation is still on in the area”, he said.

Police recovered one SBBL gun, three country made shotguns, one 7.65 magazine, two detonators, two GNLA demand pads, two GNLA ID cards belonging to Nikam Ch. Momin alias Baichung and Panto G. Momin, election ID card of Kairosh Marak, 4 mobile sets, one school certificate of Sengseng T. Sangma, ID card belonging to Bantera Momin, Simon Mrong of North Bangladesh.- From Our Correspondent
