GNLA commander killed

TURA, MAR 22: An area commander of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was killed in an encounter at Bangsi Alda village under Mendipathar police station in North Garo hills on Tuesday afternoon.

The area commander has been identified as Walnang T. Sangma alias Balti. He was in-charge of the outfit in North Garo hills.

A police release issued said that the Meghalaya police stormed the GNLA hideout around 3:30 pm, in which Walnang was killed and other cadres managed to escape into the nearby jungles.

Police has recovered 9 mm carbine, AK-47 magazine, ammunition and other incriminating documents from the incident spot.

Walnang is one of the accused in the gruesome murder of 34-year-old Josbina Sangma, a mother of four children, who was killed by the outfit in June 2014 at Chokpot in South Garo Hills. Josbina was killed infront of her minor children and husband.

The main accused in the murder of Josbina is GNLA cadre Tengton, who is still at large.-From Our Correspondent
