GNLA denies IED attack

TURA, NOV  19: The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) on Wednesday denied that they had ambushed the police convey at Rewak village, near Siju in South Garo Hills yesterday

In the IED attack two police personnel were killed and three others sustained injuries. The deceased have been identified as havildar Aldrin Lyngdoh of 3rd Meghalaya police battalion and armed branch constable Aitom Sangma.

However the GNLA claimed that the attack could have been executed by GNLA deserters. “We have no plan to do such practices”, the statement said.

Police on Tuesday claimed that the attack was engineered by GNLA militants. The IED exploded when two police vehicles, a bullet proof mini-truck and a gypsy was on its way to Siju outpost from Baghmara, the district headquarter of South Garo Hills.

Twelve armed personnel were passing through Rewak, when the militants unleashed the terror from a nearby jungle.

The three injured cops where brought to Tura Civil Hospital yesterday late evening. Of which, two have been shifted to Guwahati today for further medical aid.

Police said a massive manhunt is on in the area to nap the militants.

Meanwhile police apprehended two GNLA rebels identified as Malseng Sangma, 32 and Tengpan Sangma, 25 from Rongrong village, near Ronjgeng in East Garo hills. Police recovered a 7.65 mm pistol with magazine, three RDS ammunition, two air guns, a handycam, a GNLA handbook, two mobile phones and a bike.- From Our Correspondent
