GNLA iterates Garo state

TURA, AUG 28: The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) said they will never surrender and come forward for unconditional talks. “We will stick to our demand for Garoland. Our arm struggle will continue till we achieve our goal”, said Savio Marak, a senior member of the outfit said in a statement on Thursday.

The GNLA rejected Meghalaya chief minister, Mukul Sangma’s appeal to avail benefit of the government scheme by joining the mainstream. “How can GNLA jump in just for a package or surprises, when our goal is clearly for Garoland?” Savio Marak said.

The GNLA  has welcomed the decision of the opposition parties to demand for a “special session” of the assembly to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in Garo hills. The idea was initiated by Garo National Council (GNC) legislator Clifford Marak, Independent legislator Saleng A. Sangma and National People’s Party (NPP) legislator James K. Sangma.

“We welcome such a move, knowing that it is moving towards a right direction.  Clifford rightly understood that the root cause of arm struggle of GNLA is for separate state. Many other groups too have same goal to achieve, we need not mention all”, said Marak.

The outfit questioned as to why Mukul is adamant and has ignored the idea, when militants wants to come over ground.  “He (Mukul) is finding ways to aggravate the situation in Garo hills by bringing in more forces to hunt down militants by intensifying operations”, the GNLA statement said.

The GNLA is of the view that Mukul is doing a “double speak”. “Offering peace at the front and backstabbing by operation, it shows his (Mukul) insincerity in bringing about peace in Garo hills”, Marak added.

Savio also said that chief minister Mukul Sangma is working against the interest of Garo hills. “Mukul came to power on the promise of bringing peace and development but everyone know that he is not a peace lover”, Savio claimed.- From Our Correspondent
