GNLA leader escapes

SHILLONG, AUG 23: The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) area commander Baichung Marak, narrowly escaped being killed during an encounter with security forces on Thursday night, police said. Acting on tip off, the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) commandoes of the state police and the CRPF’s Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) commandoes raided the training camp of the outfit in Sasatgre village, about 30 Km from Tura in West Garo Hills district.

When the SWAT and CoBRA team reached the spot, the militants opened fire and quickly fled the camp. There was no casualty either on militants or the police sides. Several incriminating documents were recovered from the place of incident. Police said the hunt is on to nab the area commander and his team.- By Our Reporter
