GNLA militant arrested

TURA, JULY 23: A top Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant Signal Ch. Sangma was arrested from Rangdapara village, near Gambegre in West Garo hills on Wednesday. He was on the wanted of the state police for attacking former minister Saleng Sangma.

West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh said, “He was arrested from his residence at 4:30 pm today. We had inputs about his presence there. He will be produced in the court tomorrow.”

In January 2013, Signal along with another GNLA militant Hadeo Momin alias Karak had planted IED on the way to Marapgre area under Gambegre block to eliminate former minister Saleng Sangma.

Hedio and Signal is among the most sought after GNLA militants next to Sohan D Shira. Hedio had given security forces a slip in an encounter on February 14, 2013 at Nalnapara, near Purakhasia, along India-Bangladesh border.

Hedio is known for unleashing terror in the Gambegre-Kherapara and Chokpot area of South Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills.

Meanwhile Jakra N Sangma, a GNLA militant, who was arrested on Tuesday from Asanang, about 18 km from Tura, was on Wednesday produced in the district session court. He has remanded for 7 days police custody.

Jakra was involved in extortion of money on behalf of GNLA area commander, Baichung Momin from Tura and its adjoining area. Police recovered Rs. 1, 23,000 from his possessions.- From Our Correspondent
