Guv feels GNLA chief cannot contest polls

Shillong, Sept 27: Making a political statement on the controversial issue of GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma intention of contesting the upcoming assembly election, Meghalaya Governor  RS Mooshahary- who is also the constitutional head of the state- made it clear that the arrested militant leader cannot contest as he has not even granted bail by the court for his criminal activities.

At a sideline of a seminar on tourism Thursday, Mooshahary questioned, “How can it be possible for him (Champion Sangma) to contest the elections when he is not even on bail… with so many cases pending against him, he cannot say he has no criminal backgrounds.”

Mooshahary, however, said, “Technically anyone can contest the election unless convicted by the court of law but the case of Champion Sangma is different.” He said the militant leader is a criminal and he is not even on bail and with so many cases pending against him will he be able to join politics.

Throwing the ball in the court of the law on this ticklish issue, Mooshahary said, “The court has to decide.”

The GNLA chairman was arrested at the Indo-Bangladesh border on July 30, hours after he was pushed back by Bangladesh authorities, Recently he told reporters he is going to contest the 2013 elections in the state.

Expressing concern on the rise of militant activities in the Garo Hills, Mooshahary who is the former chief of the elite National Security Guards said, “We have to do more to contain militancy.”- By Our Reporter
