SHILLONG, MAR 10: Meghalaya government has announced ex-gratia payment of Rs 7.50 lakhs to next of kin of the four policemen killed in an ambushed by suspected GNLA in South Garo hills district on Tuesday morning.

A government statement issued on Tuesday evening said, “Ex-gratia of Rs 7.50 lakh each will be given to the next of kin of the deceased police personnel, Rs 1 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 for the other injured.”

The release stated that the government also expresses its deep anguish at the unfortunate incident and deep gratitude to the brave soldiers of Meghalaya police who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the state.

The statement further said the government also conveys its deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

A police team led by SI Sambatsing K. Sangma, in-charge of Rongara police station and five constables who were proceeding from Rongara towards Baghmara was ambushed by the suspected GNLA militants near Ampanggre village around 10:30 AM.

As a result SI Sambatsing K. Sangma, ABC Tangseng Arengh, BNC Lenin Ch Marak and BNC Hemingstone died on the spot. UBC Apron Marak and BNC Baite Sangma were injured. BNC Baite Sangma has since been air-lifted to NEIGRIHMS for immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya DGP Rajiv Mehta who is in Tura rushed to the spot immediately  to take stock of the situation.

The government release further stated that the  government is determined to eliminate the menace of militancy in the state and will take all possible steps to ensure the security of all citizens of the state.- By Our Reporter
