Govt assures college to function without pressure

SHILLONG, AUG 10: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday assured that the state government will ensure that the prestigious Lady Keane College will function without pressure from anybody.

This came after the Lady Keane College was asked to pay a sum of Rs 45 lakh as “property tax’” by the Shillong Cantonment Board since it is located on defence land.

Rymbui told reporters that in the next two-three days, the governing body of the college will sit and take necessary steps on the matter.

“The state government will also do everything to ensure that the Lady Keane college will function without pressure from anybody,” he assured.

He said that the governing body of the college is yet to inform the state government on this regard.

“However, on a personal front I have talked with the principal of Lady Keane College yesterday and enquire about how it started and why this issue and he has explained to me that this is first time that this type of thing happened and to the best of their knowledge, the Lady Keane College which was established since 1934, have all the records to prove that they are not in the cantonment area,” Rymbui stated.
