Govt assures to address water crisis

SHILLONG, OCT 13: The state government has assured to immediately address the water crisis faced by the residents of Shillong particularly in East Shillong and West Shillong.

The assurance came after the issue was flagged by the MLAs of the two constituencies – Ampareen Lyngoh and Mohendro Rapsang – in a meeting convened by the Chief Secretary DP Wahlang on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the reason behind the water crisis was due to the fluctuation and tripping of power lines leading to insufficient power being pumped to Mawphlang which is our main generator of water supply.

“That has been sorted out. We have been given an assurance that the power supply to Mawphlang will remain uninterrupted by adopting various methods which are very technical in nature,” she said.

She informed that people are spending a lot of money to augment water supply to their homes.

“Even an MLA like me has just in the last 15 days paid 12,000 rupees for water in my own home so you can imagine how it impacts the common man. Therefore, I am looking forward to this problem being resolved quickly,” she said.

Expressing concern over the delay in commissioning of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) Phase-III, Lyngdoh said the matter was also discussed in the meeting and it is expected that all these storages of water to Shillong will soon be commissioned.

On the issue of inadequate number of water tankers to temporarily feed water to the affected localities, the MLA said the government has assured to provide the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) with five additional water tankers during the crisis periods.

“I hope the entire exercise will ensure the problem is resolved positively. We are very concerned as we had so much rain but no water coming to our taps. I am also concerned as citizens are becoming frustrated and restless,” she said.

“Government has given us assurance so let us  be patient. We will review this matter in about two-three weeks and we hope by then will have stable water supply and be restored back to critical areas like Shillong West, Shillong East including Nongthymmai,” she added.
