Govt considering solar energy in the state

solar-power-houseSHILLONG:  As Meghalaya is reeling under severe power crisis, the state government is seriously considering tapping alternative solar power source to resolve the power deficit issue as additional chief secretary BK Dev Varma, who is also in-charge of power, have had a meeting with officials of the Meghalaya Non-Conventional & Rural Development Agency (MNC&RDA) recently.

To encourage the consumers to switch over to renewal energy, the state government is considering approaching the banks to consider giving consumption loan for installation of the solar energy in their residences.

It is learnt that government employees will first be encourage to switch over to solar energy as they can easily avail loan from the banks against their salary for installing the solar energy in their residence.

A power department official said, “The state government is actively considering tapping the solar energy to resolve the issue of power crisis in the state.” He said it has also been suggested to the state government to consider using renewal energy for all the government offices.

Using solar energy for all the government offices will also make a great economic sense to the state government as the Union Ministry Of New & Renewal Energy gives 90 percent subside. He said, “The state government will only has to pay 10 percent on the total cost of installing solar energy as the union government  gives 90 percent subsidy to government establishment. “

The official informed that once the state government approves using solar energy in its offices, the MNC&RDA will write to the union government for providing subsidy to Meghalaya.

Currently, works are in progress in all the deputy commissioner offices in the old seven districts for installation of power energy in the state. The official said that in the newly created district headquarter also the concept of using solar energy will be extended soon.

Besides survey is being conducted by the MNC&RDA to provide solar energy in all the Civil Hospitals, Community Health Centers (CHCs) and Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in the state.- By Our Reporter
