Govt servants join us: HNLC

SHILLONG, AUG 26: The Khasi rebel outfit – Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) invited government employees to be part of its arms struggle even as it confirmed a teacher’s joining the outfit.

“We welcome the teacher Sromwell Mawdoh into the council’s fold for his willingness to join hands thereby sacrificing his job and his family,” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement came a day after the teacher made his decision public that he has decided to join the outfit.

Sainkupar said Mawdoh was the former headmaster of the Laishnong, Secondary School, Mawlangsu village in West Khasi Hills District.  According to him, the former headmaster was hunted by the police department, but instead of surrendering himself he decided to ultimately leave his job and support the council in its cause.

In a statement issued on Monday, Mawdoh said he strongly drew inspiration to join the outfit from the former Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Fredrick Kharmawphlang who had earlier this year gone to join the HNLC.

“As one among the teachers of the state, in the past few years after observing the way the outfit is functioning, I was deeply influence by its ideology especially when the former KSU vice president Fredrick Kharmawphlang had went to join the outfit,” Mawdoh said.

Mawdoh  said, “I take this opportunity to continue my endeavour to contribute to the upliftment

The HNLC also made an open invitation to all government employees of the state to join hands with the outfit even as it expressed its willingness for bilateral ceasefire agreement with the state government.

“The outfit openly invites government employees who wants to join the council as part time workers (without resigning from their jobs),” Sainkupar said. He said that at the moment the desire of the HNLC is to know and to be known, to be accepted and understood.

“We were created to stand up to protect the interests of our people, to have relationship with our people and to work for the betterment of each other,” Sainkupar said while pointing that these are the tools that can bring about reconciliation and help the outfit to work through its issues so the outfit can reap the benefits of more meaningful, peaceful region.- By Our Reporter
