SHILLONG, JULY 11: Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), which has been demanding a ‘white paper’ on uranium mining, alleged the Congress led state government of taking a hasty decision in leasing out a land at Mawthabah to the UCIL for 30 years, that led the latter to issue the tender notice recently.

Speaking to newsmen at the sideline of a party meeting on Monday, UDP president Donkupar Roy said, “It is informed that the Congress government had already leased the land at Mawthabah area for 30 years to the UCIL way back in 2010.”

His statement came after protests from several quarters against the recent tender notice for Expression of Interest (EOI) issued by Uranium Coporation of India Limited (UCIL) without the consent of state government and KHADC.

Roy also added, “The land was also handed over to the UCIL. The UCIL would have not made the move to float the recent EOI if it did not have land.”

Stating that the party’s stand, Roy said the UDP  stand on the uranium issue has always been that it is necessary for the state government to first come out clear that there will be no health hazard on the people and the environment. He however said, “The government shouldn’t have rushed into leasing out the land to the UCIL.”

Roy said that the UCIL should refrain from making any attempts to carry out uranium mining until and unless the apprehension and fear of the people in the state is cleared and resolved. He also said the Centre and the UCIL cannot carry out uranium mining without the consent and approval of the state government.-By Our Reporter
