‘Govt manipulating firing’

SHILLONG, NOV 20: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Thursday accused the state government and the police department of manipulating to delay to provide adequate compensation to families of the deceased who were killed in the September firing incident in East Jaintia hills.

“The delay in providing adequate compensation to the families of the deceased Derestmon Siangshai (23) and Setlang Phawa (36) of Wapungskur village who were shot dead when a firing incident took place at Mookhep village is a clear case of manipulation by the district administration, police department and the government,” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement on Thursday

Nongtraw said it is clearly understood that the magisterial probe will try to give a clean chit to the police officials engaged in the brutal murder. He said,“The cartridges fired upon the deceased should be sent to ballistic experts and forensic lab to determine the guns that were used by the police.”

The HNLC also expressed its support to the demand of the Dorbar Shnong Wapungskur to pay compensation of Rs.10,00,000 each to the next of kin of these two people who have died, providing jobs to at least one members of their families and taking care of the educational needs of all of Setlang Phawa’s eight children till they reach the age of 18.

Nongtraw felt that the others who were injured in the firing should also be accommodated in providing compensation for their medical expenses.

The HNLC also said if the Government of Meghalaya believes in justice then it should take stern action against the officials who were responsible in issuing the order to shoot indiscriminately at the innocent people.

The state government is yet to make public the findings of the magisterial inquiry despite the deadline having expired after giving extension of 0 days after October 30.- By Our Reporter
