SHILLONG, JUNE 15: The state government has proposed that the railway line connecting Shillong should go up to Cherrapunjee (Sohra), the wettest place on earth, for attracting tourists and promoting high-end tourism in the state.

Speaking to reporters after a review meeting with representatives of NERF, chief minister Mukul Sangma said that the government has suggested that they should take it beyond Shillong upto Cherrapunjee so that it becomes a separate dedicated railway only for tourism.

“It will be the most sought after train ride for people especially for romantic couples who would like to visit Meghalaya for honeymoon and anniversary in the midst of beauty and whole charm of nature,” he said.

He informed that the project to connect Shillong by railway was approved as a national project in 2010-2011 after long drawn engagement with the Government of India.

Sangma said that he had also asserted that the railway connectivity in Meghalaya must be designed in such a way that will open up new opportunities for the state and people who would like utilize it for high-end tourism destination.

“This railway stretch will have a separate product, which is linked completely to tourism and separate facility for farmers to ensure they find right kind of market which is considered niche,” he said.

According to him, only then the people associated with farming can create chain of business and it will open up entrepreneurship.
