Govt proposes to set up entry-exit points at Mendipathar railway station

SHILLONG, SEPT 26: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today proposed the setting up of entry-exit points at the first railway station in Meghalaya citing that this would pave way for construction of railway projects in the state.

Replying to a short duration discussion in the Assembly here on Wednesday, Sangma said, “I had met the union railway minister in Delhi last time and mentioned to him the reasons why the two projects have been stopped.”

The two railway projects which include the 21.5 km Tetelia-Byrnihat and 108 km Shillong-Byrnihat rail line have remained non-starters following the stiff opposition from the anti-influx groups.

“I had also mentioned that if we can start off with an entry and exit points in Mendipathar railway station it would instill confidence on our people. He (minister) was very supportive of the idea and said if manpower is given from your side we have no problem in doing this,” Conrad informed the House.

The chief minister also said he had requested the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong and home minister James K Sangma to identify suitable location for the setting up of the entry and exit points in Mendipathar.

“I have requested the Dy CM and home minister immediately after the session is over to take time out and visit the location and to find out the location where a facilitation centre in Mendipathar could be set up which I am sure would instill confidence on the people. I am sure big projects can also move forward with the support and cooperation of the people,”    he said.
