SHILLONG, APR 3: The state government will soon appoint a full-fledged executive chairman of the Meghalaya Board of School Education even as it assured to take corrective steps to address the problem related to the numerous errors in the board’s textbooks for class IX.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Minister in-charge Education Lahkmen Rymbui said that the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) has been without a full time executive chairman for the past few years.

“The need of the hour is for the board to have a full time executive chairman and the state government has taken note of this and will accordingly make appointment if we get a good and efficient person for the post,” he said.

With regards to the issue of errors in the board’s textbooks which include social science, the minister assured that he would look into the matter and ensure corrective measures is taken so that students do not suffer.

Admitting that the matter is very serious, Rymbui said, “I have asked copy of those textbooks because I am a father too and I don’t want my children to study books where facts are misrepresented.”

Asked whether action will be taken against the board, he however said the government would study the issue first before drawing any conclusion.

“I assure you this will be the first and the last incident and we will ensure that such things should not repeat in the future,” the minister added.

Earlier, NGOs including the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) have demanded the board to stop the publication and use of the social science textbooks for class IX after it was found to be full of errors which include misrepresentation of facts about the Khasi indigenous community.

Meanwhile, sources informed that the education minister had also directed the board’s executive chairman Pravin Bakshi to come up with immediate solution to the problem and ensure that students are in no way taken for a ride.
