Govt to examine NRC demand

SHILLONG, AUG 6: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has asked the political department to examine the demand for implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

Informing this here on Monday, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said, “We have referred in consultation with the chief minister to the political department to study this issue.”

“Let them (department) study and they may come up (with recommendations) in the form of a Cabinet memo for us to then sit down and discuss and take a final decision on the matter,” he added.

The deputy chief minister said that the decision was taken after the government have received demands from pressure groups and also political parties for implementation of NRC in the state.

Asked, Tynsong said that it does not necessarily mean that the government is in favour or not in favour of NRC but the matter will have to be discussed first.

“In fact we don’t say that we are in favour or not in favour but we are open to the idea of our people in the state whatever recommendation or suggestion being made by them,” he stated.
