Govt to implement MLHEP-III

SHILLONG, APR 20: The state government has decided to implement the Myntdu Leshka Hydro Electric Project stage-III.

Informing this on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) intends to come up with the stage-III of Myntdu Leshka HE Project.

“Now, the engineers and technical experts of MeECL are on the job to prepare all the details for implementing the project,” he told reporters.

Asked about the issue relating to the highly-acidic water of the Myntdu River due to coal mining, Tynsong however said all are aware that the National Green Tribunal had already closed coal mining in Meghalaya adding even the supreme court says yes mining activities can be allowed but a highly mechanized system should be put in place.

“I am very sure because quite a number of individuals and miners have already applied for mining leases. They prepare the mining plan and according to the prescribed norms of the MMDR Act, I am sure they will get the mining lease,” he said while hoping that once mining starts with the use of technology, such concerns of acidic water will be addressed.
