Govt to review rescue ops

SHILLONG, JAN 21: The state government will soon review the ongoing operations to rescue the 15 miners trapped in an illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills District before taking a final decision on the matter.

“…we have to sit and review this whole thing once again. It will be appropriate to call all the field officers whether it is from the Navy, NDRF, Coal India Limited and others for taking their views and then take a final call,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma said on Monday.

Responding to a query, Sangma told reporters that all the agencies involved in the operation are trying their level best and putting their 100 percent plus to rescue the people or retrieve (if they are not alive) their bodies.

“Though, we intend to at least not give up easily but we are seeing that it looks like an exercise that is not going to work in a very positive manner as the kind of result we are seeing is not encouraging,” he said.

Reacting to reports citing that the state government is likely to call off the operations, Sangma said the government is yet to decide on that.

“We are going to take inputs from all the experts from different organisations that have been working on this,”the CM said adding “Once we speak to them and get a report on what is happening on the ground zero then will be able to take a call on it.”

The Indian Navy on Sunday had suspended their attempts to pull the remains of the miner detected three days ago deep inside the 370 foot-deep coal mine in East Jaintia Hills District.

Asked on this, the chief minister while informing that the state government has given the order said the report from the medical department, Navy, administration and forensic is that the body is disintegrating.

“Therefore we decided that we will suspend the operation of trying to take it (body) out because it is really not working out,” he said.

Family members of victims from Garo Hills have also been summoned to the site to help identify one of the miners from the video taken by the ROV earlier last week.

Meanwhile, operations spokesman R Susngi informed that the Coal India Limited today pump out water from two old shafts and the total discharged is 3402000 litres .

The KSB Operate their pump since yesterday evening till 5pm today for 21 hours and the discharged of water is 4158000 litres,  he said adding The odhisa fire service also started their pump water from 11 am  to 5pm  today and the total discharged is 540000 litres.

He said the NDRF continue to coordinate with other agencies with all their   available resources.

At least 15 miners were trapped in an illegal coal mine at Khloo Ryngksan in East Jaintia Hills District since December 13, last year.
