SHILLONG, JAN 22: In its effort to weed-out government officials who are either related or having close association with candidate who is contesting the February 23 Meghalaya assembly elections, the Meghalaya government transferred two Block Development Officers (BDOs) working with the Community & Rural Development (C&RD) department.

The two BDOs PS Tynsong of the Pynsursla C&RD block and MD Arengh, BDO of Resubelpara C&RD block have been reverted to their parent organisation, the agriculture department on Tuesday.

Agriculture Development Officer (ADO) P Suchen has been posted in place of Tynsong and ADO Bomfield G Momin in place of Arengh.

Secretariat sources said that more transfer of officers who are either related to contesting candidates or who are deemed to have political connection is in the offing. A source said, “The government has already made a list of such officers and the process of transferring them from the present posting has already been set in motion.”

The government has worked out three classifications for officers who ought to be transferred because of the upcoming assembly elections. The officer who are related to a contesting politician, an officer who has completed three years of posting in a particular place and an officer who is deemed to have political connection either with a candidate or political party.

Speaking about the election specific transfer of officers, Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik told this website that any department can initiate such transfer without consulting the election department if it feels that the officer is likely to give undue favour to the politician or political party.

Naik, however, said the department whose officer has been drafted for performing election duty but the government wants to transfer him/her will need to take the concurrence of the Election Commission. He said as of now there has not been any request for such transfer.-By Our Reporter
