Goyal: Efforts needed to curb superstitions

goyal-pix-300x225SHILLONG, JULY 31: To curb the growing superstitious belief in witchcraft and the associated incidents, East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that it needs collective effort to curtail such belief and incidents.

Goyal told reporter on Wednesday, “ We require  the collective efforts of people from all walks of life to tackle the issue.”

The increasing instances of some people being victimized because they have been alleged of praticising witchcraft seems to be growing and the latest case is when the Mawryngkang village dorbar shnong members forced one Noping Khongsit to eat human excreta as he was accused of practicing witchcraft

Goyal informed that as part of his effort to tackle this social menace he will rope in various traditional institutions and Rangbah Shnongs of local villages to ensure that people are not victimized on the flimsy accusation of practicing witchcraft.

In the Mawryngkang case, police arrested the Rangbah Shnong Kerini Khongit, assistant Rangbah Shnong Thwer Tynsong and village secretary Jwatbod Khongmalai   forcing the Khongsit to eat human excreta after they had surrendered to the police.

Goyal also informed that two cases incidents related to the allegation of   practicing witchcraft were reported in the East Khasi hills district within one and half years.

Goyal said there is a need to sensitize people about such beliefs and informed that the administration is organizing programmes to educate people on this issue.  He said, “I had a meeting recently where we involved local headman of villages and civil societies to discuss the means to stop such things.”

On the reported notice of the National Human Rights Commission directing the East Khasi Hills DC and SP to reply to the incident of making Khongsit to eat human excreta Goyal  said, “We have not received the order as yet but will reply to the commission accordingly once we receive it.” – By Our Reporter
