GSU calls night blockade

TURA, FEB 11: The Garo Students Union (GSU) southern zone has called for a dawn to dusk -6 pm to 5 am- two days night road blockade in the district on February 18 – 19 even as it demanded immediate government intervention on issues affecting South Garo hills.

Among several issues, the GSU has demanded appointment of full-fledged IAS officer as deputy commissioner of South Garo hills. The government had appointed senior Meghalaya civil servant as the deputy commissioner of the district. However, he is yet to assume charge.

The GSU staged protests earlier demanding appointment of full-fledge deputy commissioner.

The other demands include establishment of revenue department and appointment of staffs for disaster management department.  The GSU has also asked the government to look into the deplorable road and communication network in the district.

In a release issued on Wednesday the unit has sought government intervention for repair of Baghmara to Karonggre via Sibbari and Baghmara to Nongal via Siju roads. It  also asked the government to look into the border fencing compensation, which has been pending for long.

Angry with the legislators representing South Garo Hills in Meghalaya assembly, the GSU general secretary Southern Zone Walbinath Ch. Marak said,  “The public have voted them not to allow them to enjoy power but to look into the welfare of the district.”- From Our Correspondent
