Guv seeks govt views

SHILLONG, DEC 6: Governor Tathagata Roy has asked the state government to submit its views on the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage Bill, Regulation to implement Inner Line Permit and two others passed by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) recently.

In a letter to the Commissioner & Secretary of District Council Affairs (DCA) on November 29, the Deputy Secretary to the Governor PS Kharkongor said, “In this connection, the comments/views of the government may be furnished.”

The KHADC had during its autumn session passed the KHAD (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (First Amendment) Bill, 2018 and KHAD (as adapted from the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873) Regulation, 2018.

The governor also sought the views of the government on the KHAD (Constitution of Subordinate Council of Traditional Chiefs and Headmen) Rules, 2018, and the United Khasi-Jaintia Hills District (Establishment of Town Committee) (Second Amendment) Rules, 2018.

Earlier, the Seng Tipkur Tipkha Ieng Ehrngiew Khun Hynniewtrep (STIEH) had urged the governor to speed up granting his assent to the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage Bill so that it becomes an Act.

On this, the deputy secretary has also requested the government to examine the letter submitted by the STIEH president on November 27.

Informing about this development here on Thursday, KHADC chief Hispreaching Son Shylla said, “We highly appreciate the concern shown by the governor and we urge the state government to speed up giving its views on these matters.”
