SHILLONG, DEC 9: Governor Satya Pal Malik has assured to take up with the Centre for immediate implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) in Meghalaya during his visit to Delhi after December 17.
The assurance was made to a government delegation led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma during a meeting held at Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday.
Sangma was also accompanied by Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong.
The issue related to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Bill, 2020 was also discussed during the meeting, which the governor felt that the matter still has certain concerns which need to be discussed with the Centre.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sangma informed that the governor has expressed concern about these issues and assured to take up the matter with the ministry of home affairs (MHA) at his level.
“The governor will go to Delhi post December 17. He will be meeting the union home minister Amit Shah and other leaders to discuss this matter (ILP) and we hope that we will find a positive way forward on this,” he said.
“He has also asked me to parallelly follow up this matter. He again expressed that the concern of the people of the state are also important to him and that he will do his best to discuss this matter with the MHA and try to move this forward,” Sangma added.
Asked when the state government is expecting to meet the Centre to discuss on the ILP issue, the chief minister however said, “We wait for that as I said the governor is going to take up the matter at his level. So we will wait for that and see how things unfold.”
“In the meantime, we are in touch with the central government on a continuous basis,” he stated.
When enquired as to what were the clarifications the governor had sought regarding the MRSSAB, Sangma however said, “It is not about clarification. He has seen the entire file, he has seen the entire bill and he feels that it is something which is doable and possible.”
“At the same time he feels this matter still needs to be discussed with the Centre because there were certain concerns earlier and because of that this bill did not go through at that point in time. Therefore, it will only be appropriate to discuss it with the Centre with MHA specifically, and that is what he will be doing,” he said.
Terming it as a positive message, the chief minister expressed confidence that the governor will do his best to discuss with the Centre and try to move things forward.
