Governor of Meghalaya, Tathagata Roy meeting the District Officials, Representatives of Mother's Union Tura, Senior Citizens at Circuit House Tura on 18.2.2019SHILLONG, FEB 18: Governor, Tathagata Roy today met the West Garo Hills District Officials, Mother’s Union, Tura, Senior Citizens Forum, Tura at Circuit House, Tura.

The Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Ram Singh, Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, Dr M G R Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, M T Sangma, Extra Assistant Commissioners, District Officers, President, Nokma Council, Tura S G Momin, President, Mother’s Union, Balsa Sangma were among others who attended the meeting.

While addressing the gathering in his maiden visit, the Governor, Tathagata Roy informed that this visit is as per the desire of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi to make a visit especially to the district headquarters of the state of Meghalaya and listen to the grievances of the people and provide due facilities to the people of the region. He also said that there are vast potential for improving tourism sector in the region and explore employment opportunities in the region. Further, he said that the Mother’s Union has appraised him of the increasing crime against women in the region and seeks help as to how to tackle these issues when the need arises.

After being briefed by the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police about various issues, he said that he would appraised the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma about the key issues mostly faced by the people in the district including domestic violence, drinking water problem, practice of jhum cultivation which degrades the environment as well as the catchment areas of the region and the status of roads and highways in the area.

During the meeting the President, Nokma Council had appraised the Governor on the issues of environmental degradation and protection of catchment areas in the region as well as preservation of various fauna in the region.

Meanwhile, the Governor also launch the Start Up India – North East Yatra at Don Bosco College Tura after meeting the District Officials.

In his brief address, the Governor expressed his gratitude to the Catholic Missionaries for their dedicated work in the field of education in the region and added that his family including his wife and children had studied in schools run by catholic missionaries in Kolkatta. Speaking about the unique and diverse culture and traditions of India, he said that no other country in the world have such diverse culture and language and lives in harmony all over the country.

Stating that he is no stranger to State of Meghalaya, since a part of his childhood have been spent in Shillong earlier, he said that this is his first visit to Garo Hills and said that he would visit again in future. He also urged the students to become successful and great citizens of Garo Hills in particular and India in general and contribute to the progress and prosperity of the nation in future.

The Governor then paid a visit to the Nokrek National Park and Chandigre Rural Resort before proceeding to East Garo Hills, Williamnagar.
