SHILLONG, APR 4: Hailstones accompanied by rain hit some parts of the Shillong city briefly on Friday afternoon while heavy rainfall accompanied by massive hailstones on Thursday night caused severe damages to houses and crops in several villages of Betasing block under South West Garo hills district.

Interestingly the hailstones on Friday afternoon hit some parts of the Shillong city while others part of the city only briefly experience rainfall.

Howvever in West Garo hills, some  villages were worst hit by hailstones on Thursday night. The villages that saw maximum damage because of the hailstones on Thursday were Dorambokgre, Jewilgre and Bolgamgre while many others had a few houses damaged.

Over 90 percent households of these villages had their CGI rooftops completely damaged and in Dorambokgre village, the CGI roof of a school building which will be used as a polling station in the upcoming Lok Sabha election, has been fully damaged.

Betasing Block Development Officer AG Momin, who rushed to the spot immediately, has directed the concerned Gram Sevaks to go to these villages and assess the extent of damages for taking necessary relief measures.

Later in Friday afternoon, the district’s deputy Commissioner Ram Singh also visited the villages to take stock of the damage inflicted by the hailstones.- By Our Reporter
