SHILLONG, MAY 3: Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) president Lamphrang Kharbani along with four others were arrested for their alleged nexus and aiding the banned Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (HNLC) by the police on Saturday.

Kharbani and the four others were arrested from Rangthong, a remote border village in South West Khasi hills district while they were on their way back to Shillong after meeting the leaders of HNLC in Bangladesh, police sources informed.

The four have been identified as Shynshar Thongni of Domskhen of Mawkyrwat, Barless Nongsiej of Mawkyrwat, Mighter N Marwein of Mawlai Motsyiar and Bryan Tongwah of Mawlai Mawdatbaki Dongpata.

Police inform that one of the arrested is also a former member of HNLC, and had been arrested earlier.

East Khasi hills SP (city) Vivek Syiem said the police on Friday night conducted operation at Rangthong village and arrested Kharbani and four others, who are sympathizers of the HNLC.

Syiem said,  “From Kharbani possession, a demand note printed under the letter head of the HNCL was recovered but the letter is yet to name the person from whom the demand is to be made.”

According to preliminary investigation, Syiem said that the HANM president has been instrumental in extending help to HNLC for extortion money from the region.

Syiem informed the five arrested have been taken into custody by the police in Mawkyrwat and interrogation against them is on.

Kharbani had been arrested twice last year relating to two cases -illegal possession of arm and threatening a lady.

In November 2012, Kharbani was also arrested for procuring the weapon used by a four member of highway gang. One of gang members had sold the 7.65 pistol to Kharbani for Rs 40, 000 which was later seized from Mawkasiang village along with 6 bullets. The second case he had been arrested was for allegedly threatening a lady on July 3, 2013 and released on August 14.- By Our Reporter
