SHILLONG, MAR 28: The recently inquiry report that was tabled which probed into the September 24, 2014-Mookhep firing-incident that killed two civilians has been severely criticized due to its failure to name the perpetrators.

This has prompted an ngos from Jaintia hills to demand that the state government handover the investigation into the incident to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure end of justice.

“We demanded the state government led by chief minister Mukul Sangma to immediately handover the investigation into the firing incident to the CBI,” Jaintia National Council (JNC) chairman Sambormi Lyngdoh said.

Lyngdoh said that the council would soon submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister on the matter citing that the people of East Jaintia Hills region have completely loss their confident on the state police.

It was after a long public hue and cry, the inquiry report submitted by the Commissioner & Secretary DP Wahlang was tabled by the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma in the just concluded session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Terming the Wahlang’s inquiry report as “partial”, Lyngdoh said, “We strongly expressed our disappointment and dissatisfaction on the report, as it has failed to ensure justice is delivered to the victims who were killed and injured in the firing.”

Stating that the report had only mentioned the lapses on the part of the police besides the residences of the MIPRL leaders, the JNC chairman however alleged, “The report failed to name the officials who directed to open fire at the public.”

“It (report) has also failed to name the police personnel who are involved in shooting at the public which led to killing of the two civilians and injuring several others,” he said.

Expressing surprise on the claims made by the police in the report that they had open fire in the air, Lyngdoh however argued, “If it is really so that the police had fired in the air, the mystery remain how their bullets hit the people on the road.”

Lyngdoh said they are compelled to conclude that the report is not for any justice but only to brain-wash the people of the region, which is not acceptable and reiterated that the perpetrators should be punished as per law.- By Our Reporter
