HANM issues poll diktat for candidates

SHILLONG, DEC 27: The Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) has issued a list of diktat on eve of the ensuing Assembly elections in the state, ranging from the must-have in terms of education to must-do like reopening of the border haats.

The HANM diktat signed by its president Lamphrang Kharbani released Thursday said an MLA candidate must to the least be a graduate, practice monogamy as per the Khasi traditions, implement in letter and in spirit all schemes meant for public good, strive to protect the environment by opposing unscientific mining of mineral resources, work towards reopening of the border haat, and adopt an education policy in keeping with the traditions of the Khasi society.

The HANM also said an elected legislator must work towards amending the land acquisition Act in favour of the indigenous land owners and provide special status to the indigenous local tribes as enshrined in the Constitution for tribals in the states of like in Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland and Mizoram.

The HANM commanded that “a legislator should unite with other representatives to demand a separate state for the Hynñiewtrep people and strengthen the traditional institutions such as the Dorbar Hima and Dorbar Shnong as well as adhere to the old treaties and agreement (signed) between the then Khasi states and the Government of India.”

Fighting for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the 8th schedule of the Constitution and seeking an amendment to the job reservation policy, the HANM said, should be the musts in the agenda of the prospective legislators.(Our Reporter)
