HDR Lyngdoh among five vying for UDP ticket

SHILLONG, OCT 11: Shella legislator Balajied Kupar Synrem and former home minister HDR Lyngdoh were among the five who have applied for a ticket from the United Democratic Party (UDP) for the upcoming 2023 Assembly elections.

This was informed by president of the UDP East Khasi Hills District Titosstarwell Chyne after chairing a special meeting of the executive committee here on Tuesday.

Chyne, who is also currently the KHADC chief and MDC from Sohra, told reporters the district committee has received reports from circles which indicated that the party is still very strong in the 10 constituencies.

“Of this, we have received applications from the candidates, who have been recommended by the circles. Accordingly, the district election committee has also approved five applications submitted by sitting MLA of Shella Balajied Kupar Synrem, HDR Lyngdoh from Sohiong constituency, MDC Mitchel Wankhar – Mylliem, Olan Sunn – Mawsynram and Anthony Khongwang – Pynursla. These applications will be sent to the state election committee (SEC) for its final approval,” he said.

According to him, there is only one ticket aspirant in all the five constituencies.

Chyne however said applications from the other five constituencies – Mawryngkneng, Mawkynrew, Nongkrem, Sohra and Mawphlang – are yet to be received by the party.

“As a president of the district, I also cannot claim that I will get a ticket as procedure has to be followed,” he said.

When asked, the president of UDP EKH said the party will be in a position to confirm on whether or not the sitting Mawphlang legislator Eugeneson Lyngdoh will contest next year, after forming the circle of the party in the constituency.

“We already appointed the conveners to form the circle, which will accordingly recommend the candidate for the party,” he said.

On whether the chief Adviser of the UDP and former deputy chief minister Bindo M Lanong  has applied for a ticket to contest from Nongkrem constituency, Chyne however said, “We are yet to receive his application.”

Lanong had opposed the decision of the party to give a ticket to the sitting Nongkrem legislator Lambor Malngiang.

On this, Chyne said no one can claim that the party will give them a ticket if they have not applied.

“Therefore, we have a process and that is a candidate has to be recommended by the circle and then the name will be sent to the district and then to the SEC for its approval. Anybody can claim he will apply for a ticket but they should follow as per procedure,” he added.

Meanwhile as part of strengthening the party in the district, Balajied Kupar Synrem has been appointed as adviser of the UDP EKH, former MLA Remington Pyngrope, Monarch Shabong and OS Jyrwa as working presidents, Wellbirth Rani as vice president and Mary Kharmih as women wing’s secretary.
