Hideout raided,ultra killed

TURA, SEPT 10: Meghalaya police commandos led by Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) stormed a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) makeshift hideout at Pakigre village, near Rongjeng in East Garo Hills and killed one of the militant.

Police said at least 22 GNLA militants were hiding in the village led by Chekam alias Babang. The incident took place around 5 am on Wednesday. Rongjeng is about 110 km from Tura.

“Based on our information, we launched an early morning operation in the village. We raided the place and in the ensuing gun battle, one GNLA militant was killed. Other militants managed to escape taking advantage of the civilian population”, said East Garo hills SP Davis Marak.

No civilian and policemen were injured in the operation. The raid began last night and lasted for more than six hours. Marak said, “We have picked up the house owner, where the militants were taking shelter.”

The house owner has been brought to Williamnagar police station for questioning. Marak said the house owner claimed that he was forced to give the house to them.  The slain militant is yet to be identified. Police has recovered a pistol, a mobile, food items as well as other equipments from the hideout.- From Our Correspondent
