High Court disposes of PIL against NEIGRIHMS

SHILLONG, JULY 15: The Meghalaya High Court has disposed of a PIL with regards to the internal problems in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) which has affected the patients especially in the cardiology department.

In its judgment passed here on Monday, the division bench comprising of the Chief Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal and Justice HS Thangkhiew said that the petitioner in person and counsel for the respondents are ad idem that the functioning of Cardiology Department and authorities of NEIGRIHMS have streamlined the functioning in the hospital and supplies of items are being regularly made by various pharmacies including Amrit Pharmacy which is situated in NEIGRIHMS.

“It was also stated that no further monitoring is required to be made by this Court at this stage. A prayer was made that the issue may be closed as such. Accordingly, PIL No.5 of 2019 shall stand disposed of as noted above,” the bench said.

Senior advocate SP Mahanta had earlier filed an application in PIL No.3 of 2016 for taking cognizance by this Court as it was of serious concern that the unfortunate incident had taken place postponing 34 surgeries in Cardiology Department due to internal differences between the Cardiology Department and the authorities of NEIGRIHMS.

The bench however said that PIL No.3 of 2016 is pending in this Court relating to deficiencies in health services in the State of Meghalaya and vide order dated May 20, MC (PIL) No.3 of 2019 was delinked from PIL No.3 of 2016 and it was registered as separate PIL No.5 of 2019.

It may be mentioned here that the recent stalemate between the NEIGRIHM administration and the cardiology department had affected the patients of the institute.

Earlier, the bench had directed the state government to depute an additional chief secretary to head a meeting for coming up with a long term solution to ensure such situation do not arise again in the institute.
