SHILLONG, JAN 23: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Monday accused the Congress led coalition government of trying to shield its former chairman turned MLA Julius Dorphang, who was arrested for raping a minor girl.

“The people in power are seen trying to shield Julius Dorphang and even the molestation case by DD Lapang against a doctor when he was the then health minister of the state,” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement on Monday.

Dorphang was arrested and booked under the provisions of the POCSO Act for his involvement in raping a 14-year-old girl, who was rescued recently from a sex racket in a guest house owned by home minister’s family.

Terming the case as a political scandal, he said, “The recent transfer of the office in charge of Madanrting only indicates that there are many politicians involved in this case.”

He also alleged that the Meghalaya Houses outside the state and even the MLA’s hostel in the state were also used as den of sex by these politicians.

Expressing concern over the rising crimes against women and children in the state, Nongtraw said, “It is meaningless for the state to feel proud that it has first woman to represent it in Rajya Sabha and first lady home minister.”

The HNLC lauded the efforts of women activists in their fight against cases under the POCSO Act adding that it would also be better for them to fight for Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (POCMA).

On the other hand, the HNLC publicity secretary also alleged that the murder of two women by Fullmoon Dhar and subsequent gunning him down about eight years ago still raise a question as to why he was killed.

“The insecurity of women and children is not only from Fullmoon but the real threats are posed by politicians in power,” he said while alleging “Whatever is happening has proven that the Congress politicians are involved in illegal activities.”

Meanwhile, the HNLC also claimed that its “operation Kyllang” had helped in curbing crimes against women and children.

“If such operation can tackle crimes against women and children then why is the state government which has all the power failed to do anything to provide security to women and children,” Nongtraw said.

He also lambasted the politicians for wasting their time in playing power politics instead of addressing real issues concerning the state.

Referring to the recent celebration of 45th statehood day, the HNLC leader said that the council fails to see that the state has fully attained its political freedom when it is yet to have proper demarcated boundary.

Stating that the people should defy the statement made by chief minister Mukul Sangma that all the tribes can live in harmony, he said, “Such statements are made just to suit his political interest.”
