Hospitals disregard rules

SHILLONG, JUNE 16: Many hospitals – both government as well as private in Meghalaya- have allegedly violated the Pre-conception & Pre-natal diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of sex selection) Act, 1994.

This was revealed in the inspection report of the National Inspection and Monitoring Committee (NIMC) submitted to the state government on April, this year.

The NIMC had conducted a spot inspection of eight hospitals in Shillong, East Jaintia Hills District and West Jaintia Hills District of the state on March 19-20, to monitor the implementation of the PC&PNDT Act, 1994 and assess the level of compliance on the ground.

“The report indicates that the State Appropriate Authority is yet to take cognizance of various instances of violations of the Act. Non-maintenance of records was also found in the visited districts,” Under Secretary to the Government of India DK Sahu said in his letter to the Additional Chief Secretary of Health & Family Welfare Y Tsering.

Meanwhile, the centre has also directed the state government to take corrective actions against erring hospitals.

“You are requested to take corrective actions and to expedite the filing of court complaints against non-complying hospitals/nursing homes identified by the NIMC team,” Sahu stated in the letter.

The hospitals inspected by the NIMC included – North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Woodland Hospital, Shillong Civil Hospital, Bethany Hospital, Ganesh Das Hospital, Dr Norman Tunnel Hospital, Jowai, Woodland Medical Centre, Jowai and Jowai Civil Hospital.

As per the inspection report, most of these hospitals have failed to display the hoardings and non availability of the copy of the PCPNDT Act.

Other anomalies like qualification of radiologist not displayed, sinologist not qualified, separate register of pregnant women not maintained were also noted in the report.- By Our Reporter
