Land acquisition opposed

SHILLONG, SEPT 25: Hynniewtrep United Awakening Movement (HUAM), an ngo from Ri Bhoi district, opposed the proposed Assam Rifles move to acquire a land belonging to a former minister Nehlang Lyngdoh for setting up a school and a hospital in Umran-Dairy.

HUAM is apprehensive that Assam Rifles’ is going to set up a camp and Umran-Dairy will become like Shillong where most of the lands have been  acquired by defense authorities.

“We strongly opposed the move to acquire land by Assam Rifles and also demanded that the dorbar shnong of Umran refrain from granting NOC and cancel the agreement entered with the Assam Rifles,” HUAM president GK Raswai told reporters on Friday.

Raswai said HUAM is not against development in the area but the union do not want to turn the area into another Shillong. He said,”We don’t want any camp to be set up, which will only create fear psychosis among the locals especially the female folks.”

Earlier, the Hynniewtrep United Awakening Movement (HUAM) had also met the Dorbar Shnong of Umran to seek clarification on the matter.

During the meeting, Umran headman Lam Mukhim Bina informed the HUAM delegation that the Assam Rifles had submitted an application to the Dorbar Shnong about 4 months ago for setting up of a school and a hospital besides an agreement was also signed.

“He (headman) however said the matter for granting NOC is still pending with the Executive Committee of the Dorbar Shnong because of growing opposition from the residents,” Raswai said.

According to the headman, the matter pertaining to land acquisition by the Assam Rifles will be take up at a Dorbar Ri slated to  be held in February next year.- By Our Reporter
