HYC asks Govt to stop discussion on railways in absence of anti-influx mechanisms

SHILLONG, NOV 19: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Friday asked the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to refrain from making any move to introduce railway heads in Khasi Hills region in view of the absence of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and other anti-influx mechanisms.

Speaking to media persons, Kharjahrin said the HYC and the people of the state will continue to strongly oppose the introduction of railways be it goods train or passenger train so long as the state does not have proper mechanism to tackle the influx issue.

He also alleged that in some parts of Assam and Tripura and even some parts of Shillong and the plain belts of Garo Hills have already become victims of influx.

“In view of this, the state government is asked to stop discussing railways prior to the implementation of ILP and other effective mechanisms in the state,” Kharjahrin said.

“Railways, be it goods or passenger trains, are the same. Therefore, we will continue to oppose the idea of introduction of railways in the state as till date Meghalaya does not have ILP or any other mechanism to tackle influx,” he added.

His statement came in the wake of the recent statement made by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma that the government is keen to engage with stakeholders for introduction of goods train in the state.
