SHILLONG, JAN 6: Eighty one year old veteran BJP leader and West Bengal governor  Keshari Nath Tripathi was sworn in as Meghalaya’s 14th Governor with Meghalaya high court chief justice Uma Nath Singh administering the oath of office and secrecy to him at a grand ceremony in the Raj Bhawan on Tuesday.

Governor KK Paul has been transferred to Uttarakhand.

Chief minister Mukul Sangma, his cabinet ministers , senior Congress leader DD Lapang, chief secretary PBO Warjri and other top bureaucrats were also present during the swearing in ceremony of the new Governor.

Tripathi will be holding additional charge as Meghalaya governor besides West Bengal.

Speaking to reporters after his swearing in ceremony, Tripathi said, “A Governor should be a person who should respect all sections of the society.” He made it clear that he will not talk politics during his tenure as governor of both the states.

“As Governor, I am Governor for every section of the society whether ruling party or the opposition and therefore I don’t talk politics in West Bengal and I will not talk politics ,” Tripathi said.

Reacting to a query how he will divide his time between West Bengal and Meghalaya, Tripathi said, “It will depend on the nature of work… If the nature of work calls for my presence here, I will be here.” He, however, was silent whether there is any possibility for him becoming  full fledged Governor of the state.

Stating that the people of Meghalaya are good natured, Tripathi said, “Everyone here is anxious about development, I will find out what are the activities which are going on.” According to him the construction of roads, airports besides transport facilities are matters which require to be considered at as urgent.

“But they are receiving the require attention,” Tripathi however added.

On the issue of frequent transfer of Governors by the NDA led government, Tripathi said that Meghalaya is such a nice place and anyone appointed here should be willing to come. He also added that the state’s natural surroundings is good so why should anybody object if appointed Governor of the state.- By Our Reporter
