SHILLONG, SEPT 9: The oppositions under the banner of Meghalaya People’s Forum (MPF) have demanded the resignation of chief minister Mukul Sangma for failing to resolve the Inner Line Permit (ILP) issue and threatened that if he does not resign then the forum will find a way to make him resign.
The demand for the chief minister’s resignation came after a decision was taken at during the MPF meeting on Monday night. The MPF comprising of the United Democratic Party (UDP), National People’s Party (NPP), HSPDP and others are firm that Sangma must step down as the chief minister.
MPF member and UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh told reporters after the meeting, “We demand that Mukul Sangma should immediately resign and step down from the chief minister’s post.” The MPF felt that the agitation that has hit the state now is because of the failure and also the adamant attitude of the chief minister to resolve the ILP issue. It said that because of the agitations of the ngos normal life in the entire state has been crippled.
Lyngdoh said, “We would soon write an official letter to the chief minister demanding his resignation and if he fail to respond positively the MPF would adopt other strategies to make his resignation happen.”
NPP leader James Sangma said instead of addressing the issue, the chief minister is camping in New Delhi which clearly shows his insensitivity towards the issue. He said, “We do not need a visiting chief minister but want a person who is in station and tries to resolve the issue in the interest of the people of the state.”
According to MPF Sangma has lost moral and legal ground to continue as the chief minister of the state.
The MPF has also formally decided to take up the issues pertaining to the deteriorating law and order situation in Garo and Khasi hills regions and the problems of the teachers in the upcoming assembly session slated next month.
Ten pressure groups have been demanding the implementation of the ILP in the state to stop illegal immigration but the state government is not inclined to listen to the demand. The ngos have started agitations to press for implementation of its demand and the four days night road blockade will begin from September 10. The night road blockade will begin from 7pm to 5am in all the eleven districts of the state.- By Our Reporter
