Shillong, November 7: As the impasse over the demand for introduction of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) between the thirteen ngos and the Congress led MUA II coalition government of Mukul Sangma continues, the   Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is toying with the idea of playing the role of the mediator between the two warring parties to break the deadlock.

KHADC chief executive member Pynshngainlang N Syiem, however, said he would first discuss the issue of donning the mediator hat with the thirty KHADC members, irrespective of party affiliation before moving forward.

Syiem told reporters at a news conference on Thursday, “Whatever will be the outcome of the meeting with the members, he  would then approach the traditional chiefs of fifty-three himas to elicit their views and suggestions on the proposal.”

Syiem informed that the consultation would revolve around the need to urge the state government to end the present impasse arising out of the demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state by the ngos.

The decision to play the mediator role  was taken because of the failure of the state government to come up with a solution on the ngos demand which has resulted in continued agitations for the last two months.

Syiem informed that the consultation meeting was proposed to be held on November 11 but the KHADC Executive Committee had to postponed it and accordingly a new date would be decided soon.

Syiem felt that  the frequent bandhs, road blockades, office picketing called by the ngos to pressurize the state government to cave in to their demand have affected the people, their socio-economic interest and state’s economic growth and development.

Syiem said, “We need to come up with a solution as such agitations cannot be allowed to continue as it will affect everybody.” He, however, made it clear that the KHADC is taking the initiative to become the mediator between the state government and ngos not for or against the demand for the implementation of ILP but to usher in peace. – By Our Reporter
