SHILLONG, AUG 8: Ngos demanding for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya will be holding a public meeting and a rally on August 16 to pressurize the state government to cave in to their demand. The public meeting will be held at Mothpran followed by a public rally that will proceed to state secretariat.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the ten pressure groups including the KSU, FKJGP, GSU, HNYF, RBYF, JYF, JSU, AJYWO, CSWO held at the KSU’s office in Jaiaw on Thursday.
In the past public meetings here held in the seven districts of Khasi and Jaintia hills and Garo hills district to garner public support on the need to introduce ILP in the state.
KSU president Daniel Khyriem told reporters after the meeting, “The public meeting to be held on August 16, will be the deciding day for the pressure groups’ future course of actions if the state government remains indifference towards implementing the ILP in the state.”
Khyriem said the ngos are demanding immediate implementation of ILP as the High Level Committee on Influx (HLCI) headed by then deputy chief minister Bindo M Lanong had recommended last year.
The Lanong committee which had submitted its report last year recommended the the implementation of the inner line permit in the state for controlling influx into Meghalaya.
FKJGP president Joe Marwein informed that the ngos will announced their agitation programme at the public meeting to be held on August 16, if government fails to pay heed to their demand. He said, “The pressure groups have been able to garner good public response from the earlier meetings held in the different districts of the state.”
Khyriem accused the state government of taking advantage of the patience shown by the pressure groups. He said, “Being silent on the issue has been mistakenly taken as weakness by the state government.” He warned that the government is wrong if it think that the ngos are weak.
Khyriem warned that the ngos are ready to intensify their agitation against the government as it has shown its unwillingness to implement the ILP.- By Our Reporter
