‘Implement pact, ensure peaceful polls’

SHILLONG, AUG 25: The National People’s Party (NPP) has demanded that the peace pact signed between the state,central governments with ANVC and ANVC (B) should be implemented in letter and spirit even as it asked  for adequate security cover Garo hills to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council slated for October.

“We have demanded that the government step up security measures required to make sure that free and fair elections are held, ” NPP working president Conrad K Sangma told newsmen after meeting home minister Roshan Warjri on Tuesday.

He said the party has also expressed concern over the law and order situation in the five districts of Garo hills.

The NPP also wanted that the government implement the peace pact with ANVC and ANVC(B) in letter and spirit

Sangma informed the home minister assured the delegation that the government will take all necessary steps and measures to ensure free and fair elections to the GHADC.  He said, “Though she (Warjri) could not give us any timeframe but only informed that the government is going to meet tomorrow to review the whole situation related to the issue.”

Speaking about the peace pact, Sangma said one year has passed but the peace pact remains to be implemented in letter and spirit and the cadres of  ANVC and ANVC (B)  are just sitting and if it is delayed too long  we don’t know what kind of reactions and thoughts will be in their minds.

Sangma, therefore, said the NPP has demanded the state government implement the peace pact in letter and spirit as soon as possible.- By Our Reporter
