Inaction on rape condemned

SHILLONG, JUN 18: The failure of the police and the state government to locate and arrest the absconding Meghalaya police sub inspector Nurul Islam who has been accused of not only raping two minors but also escaping after being arrest came under severe criticism from the   National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday.

Though little late, but nonetheless, the NPP castigated the state government and said its failure was nothing but reflection of the nonchalant attitude to crimes against women and child in Meghalaya.

The rape took place in the Ampati police station- which falls under chief minister constituency- where Islam was the officer in charge and the NPP said such incident taking place in the constituency of the CM was shameful. The party said the CM instead of monitoring the case is camping in Delhi.

The NPP said in a statement,   “We also condemn the hypocrisy of the MUA government on its empty talk on tackling the rising cases of rape in the State.”

NPP observed that the government is content by dishing out a meager compensation of Rs. 50,000 to the rape victims.

The NPP felt the biggest deterrent to such crimes is conviction and punishment, which can only be initiated if the accused is arrested in the first place.  It said, “We demand that the MUA government take this case seriously and immediately arrest Nurul Islam and other persons accused of rape in our State.”-By Our Reporter
